Here’s George W. Bush as a presidential candidate in 2000 almost sounding like a libertarian, advocating a “humble” foreign policy and arguing that it is not America’s role to go around the world telling other countries how to live. Once elected, Bush proceeded to rule as one of the most bellicose, interventionist presidents in American history, launching the disastrous Iraq War and committing various war crimes such as the sanctioning of secret torture prisons.
Several Presidents have done this in the past, campaigning as the peace ( or non-interventionist candidate) only to start wars. I can think of several such as Obama ( Libya and Syria), George Bush Jr ( Iraq, which had nothing to do with 911), Clinton ( Bosnia, continued bombing of Iraq), George Bush Sr ( first Iraq War), Kennedy/Johnson/Nixon ( Vietnam, Cambodia) …perhaps the worst was Woodrow Wilson getting involved in World War 1, a war that had nothing to do with American Interest. Instead of making the world safe for democracy, President Wilson made the world safe for Stalin and Hitler.
